Michael Simmons, Public Works Director

Michael Simmons serves as the City of Albany’s Director of Public Works, bringing strong leadership, operational expertise, and a deep commitment to public service. His background combines military discipline, advanced education, and private‑sector experience, enabling him to guide key city operations with clarity and purpose.

A native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Mr. Simmons completed 23 years of active-duty service in the United States Marine Corps, retiring honorably from the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany, Georgia. His distinguished service includes participation in Operations Desert Storm, Somalia, and Iraqi Freedom, where he demonstrated discipline, resilience, and the ability to manage complex missions.

Mr. Simmons is also an accomplished scholar. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Strayer University and a Master of Arts in Human Services Counseling with a concentration in Executive Leadership from Liberty University. He is a notary public and an active participant in the International Code Council. His academic and professional credentials support his ability to lead diverse teams, improve operations, and promote excellence across the Public Works Department.

In addition to his military and academic background, Mr. Simmons brings meaningful private‑sector experience. He founded and managed a property consulting company in Albany serving residential and commercial clients. He has also held various roles as an independent contractor in the residential and commercial construction industries, gaining hands‑on expertise in infrastructure, project management, and community development. This experience strengthens his ability to oversee public works services with both strategic vision and practical understanding.

Mr. Simmons is supported by his wife, Tara, an educator with the Lee County School System. They have three adult children and several grandchildren and remain active members of the Southwest Georgia community.
