Assistant City Manager Derrick Brown

Derrick Brown Assistant City Manager of Utility Administration

Derrick Brown has over 32 years of experience in manufacturing, accounting, business management, and leadership, having held roles of increasing responsibility.

As a proud alum of Monroe Comprehensive High School, Mr. Brown has gone on to earn a Bachelor of Accounting degree from Albany State University and a Master of Manufacturing Management from Kettering University, formerly known as GMI Engineering and Management Institute.

In his most recent role as Chief Financial Officer for the City of Albany, Mr. Brown and his team successfully managed a budget exceeding $318 million. For 14 consecutive years and counting, the Finance team has earned the “Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association. The team also earned the highly coveted “Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for fiscal year 2025 from the Government Finance Officers Association. Mr. Brown is also a Certified Retirement Plan Fiduciary, awarded by the Georgia Association of Public Plan Trustees.

Assistant City Manager K. Bruce Maples

Bruce Maples Assistant City Manager of Utility Operations Bruce Maples is a native of Albany, Georgia, and has lived here for 61 years. He attended Magnolia Elementary School, Merry Acres Junior High, Westover High (for one year), and Albany High, from which he graduated in 1978. After high school, he attended the Georgia Institute of Technology, graduating in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering.

In April of 1983, he was employed by McCoy Engineering. The following year, he was hired by Keck & Wood, Inc. In 1987, Mr. Maples became an associate vice president at Keck & Wood, Inc. In 1988, he completed the qualifications required by the State of Georgia to become a registered Professional Engineer. In 1993, Mr. Maples left the private sector to become the Assistant City Engineer for the City of Albany. On July 5th, after the retirement of the City Engineer, he assumed the responsibilities of the City Engineer’s position. He began his initial career as the City Engineer, dealing with the 1994 flood.

In 1997, Mr. Maples left the public sector to return to the private sector at Keck & Wood, resuming his original responsibilities. In July 2005, the Albany Office of Keck & Wood merged with Stevenson & Palmer Engineering, where Mr. Maples assumed the duties of Regional Manager, providing municipal engineering services to communities throughout Southwest Georgia. In August 2008, Mr. Maples was rehired by the City of Albany as Director of Engineering. Under his supervision were the Traffic Department, the Utility Engineering group, the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) team, as well as the Civil and Capital Development Divisions. In 2016, his title was changed to Managing Director of Engineering and Planning, with the Planning & Development and Building Inspection Departments added to his existing engineering responsibilities.

In January 2022, he was appointed as the Interim Assistant City Manager of Utility Operations, which added Utility Operations and Public Works to his oversight responsibilities.

Mr. Maples is married to Jane Shackelford, who graduated from Riverview Academy, the University of Georgia, and Albany State College and is a retired educator. They have three children and one granddaughter. He served on the Dixie League Baseball Board for seven years, including two years as President. He is a member of the First United Methodist Church of Albany and has served on the Board of Trustees, the Building Committee, and the Preschool Board. As a member of the Board of Trustees, he also served as a Board Member for the Alzheimer’s Caregiver Time Out (ACTO) program. He is a member of the New Horizon Sunday School Class, as well as a member of the Exchange Club of Albany. During the annual fair event, he can be found dodging cars as they come through the front gate. He is also currently a member of the Fair Board.
