Purpose

Albany Municipal Court’s Under 21 Voluntary Program is designed to educate young drivers through a restorative, rather than punitive, approach. The program gives participants the opportunity to complete educational requirements that promote accountability and responsible decision-making. Upon successful completion, the case is dismissed.

Georgia License Suspensions for Young Drivers

Under Georgia law (O.C.G.A. § 40-5-57.1), drivers under 21 are held to stricter standards than older drivers. That means younger drivers face harsher consequences for traffic violation, especially when it comes to keeping their license.

License Suspension for Drivers Under 21

If you're under 21 and convicted of any of the following offenses, your driver's license will be automatically suspended:

  • Hit and Run – O.C.G.A. § 40-6-270

  • Leaving the Scene of an Accident – O.C.G.A. § 40-6-270

  • Racing on Highways or Streets

  • Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Police Officer

  • Reckless Driving – O.C.G.A. § 40-6-390

  • Driving Under the Influence (DUI) – O.C.G.A. § 40-6-391

  • Any offense carrying four or more points (see Georgia’s points system for more details)

License Suspension for Drivers Under 18

If you're under 18 and accumulate four or more points on your driving record within 12 months, your license will be suspended. It’s also important to know that entering a "no contest" (nolo contendere) plea is treated the same as a conviction and won’t protect you from license suspension if you're under 21.
