Become a Firefighter

There are three ways to become a firefighter in the state of Georgia. To begin with, an individual can attend one of the state technical college fire science programs. Upon the successful completion of the program as a certified firefighter, one is eligible to be hired as a firefighter.

Another option is to attend the state academy in Forsyth for the eight-week certification program. Upon completing this program, an individual is eligible to be hired as a certified firefighter.

Finally, the department occasionally hosts recruitment schools, which typically last for approximately 12 weeks. Upon completion of the recruit school, if a candidate passes all their exams and the state test, they can become certified. Typically, individuals who apply directly to the City of Albany Fire Department, if selected, are part of this direct, streamlined process.

The department allows individuals from other states who are National Professional Qualified to apply, also, since they have proven knowledge, skills, and ability.
