Downtown District Added to National Register of Historic Places
Published on August 01, 2025
Albany, GA – The Georgia Department of Community Affairs, through the Historic Preservation Division, has officially announced that the Downtown Albany Commercial Historic District has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places, effective July 15, 2025.
This prestigious recognition reflects the architectural and historical significance of the district located in Dougherty County. It marks a significant milestone in Albany’s long-standing efforts to preserve and promote its rich cultural heritage.
The successful listing is the result of a strong collaborative effort between the City of Albany, the Albany Downtown Development Authority (DDA), the Albany Dougherty Inner City Authority (ADICA), and many community stakeholders—including property owners, business leaders, preservation advocates, and residents—who all played a vital role in making this achievement possible.
"This designation is a testament to the power of teamwork and shared vision," said Lequrica Gaskins, Executive Director of the Albany Downtown Development Authority and ADICA. "It underscores what we can accomplish when government, organizations, and the community work hand-in-hand to honor our past and shape the future. This listing not only celebrates the historic character of Downtown Albany but also supports our revitalization goals through access to preservation grants, tax incentives, and heritage tourism opportunities."
The National Register of Historic Places, administered by the National Park Service, is the official federal list of districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects deemed significant in American history, architecture, archaeology, engineering, and culture. Being listed provides a foundation for economic development tools and recognizes properties that help tell the story of a community’s evolution.
As Albany continues to grow and redevelop its downtown core, this designation enhances both the city's identity and its potential to attract investment, new businesses, and visitors seeking authentic and historic destinations.
