Press Release - City Awarded $7.3M for Safer Streets - 11/6/26
Published on November 06, 2026
Albany, GA – The City of Albany has been awarded $7,368,640 in federal funding through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Fiscal Year 2026 Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Implementation Grant Program.
This award will support the implementation of two major roadway safety projects identified in the Albany-Dougherty Comprehensive Safety Action Plan. The total project investment is $9,210,800, including the federal award and required local matching funds. The funding will support safety improvements at two locations within the Albany-Dougherty community:
- Radium Springs Road and Joseph Holley Circle North: Construction of a roundabout designed to improve intersection safety, reduce vehicle speeds, and minimize the potential for serious and fatal crashes.
- Tarva Road and Eight Mile Road: Implementation of corridor safety improvements, including roadway shoulder improvements and advance warning signage to improve driver awareness and reduce roadway departure crashes.
Between 2019 and 2023, these two project areas experienced a combined total of seven fatalities and 16 serious injuries. Both locations were identified in the Albany-Dougherty Comprehensive Safety Action Plan as priority areas for targeted safety improvements.
The proposed improvements are intended to address several contributing factors identified in the Action Plan, including failure to yield, disregard of traffic controls, and roadway departures. By incorporating proven roadway safety countermeasures, these projects aim to reduce the likelihood of serious and fatal crashes while making our community's transportation network safer for all roadway users.
The Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program, administered by USDOT, provides federal funding to support regional, local, and Tribal initiatives aimed at preventing roadway fatalities and serious injuries through planning, infrastructure improvements, and other roadway safety strategies.
This award represents an important milestone in advancing the safety recommendations identified in our Comprehensive Safety Action Plan. We appreciate the continued collaboration and support of our regional partners and stakeholders in working toward safer roadways throughout the Albany-Dougherty community.
