Storm Debris Collection Update
Albany, GA (April 3, 2019) – The City of Albany’s Storm Debris Collection Program with FEMA ends on May 10, 2019. All residents affected by Hurricane Michael (October 10, 2018) should have their remaining storm debris moved to the right-of-way no later than April 15, 2019. This will allow adequate time for the contractor to reduce and dispose of the debris within the project timeline.
The City of Albany and Ceres Environmental began collecting debris from Hurricane Michael on October 10, 2018. The Army Corp of Engineers assumed collection duties on November 3, 2018 and ceased debris removal on January 19, 2019. The City of Albany contracted with Ceres Environmental to collect the remaining debris from Hurricane Michael on February 12, 2019. A total of 434,583 cubic yards of debris was collected by the Corps, and an additional 669,377 cubic yards has been collected by Ceres and the City of Albany through April 2, 2019. In addition to vegetative storm debris, 110 leaning trees 12,102 hanging branches, and 4,915 cubic yards of construction and demolition storm debris has been collected.
During the final round, Ceres will collect storm related vegetative debris (tree branches, logs, etc.). The City’s Solid Waste Division will continue to collect yard trimmings (pine straw, leaves, etc.) twice a month as scheduled. Storm debris should be separated from normal yard trimmings and construction and demolition (C&D) debris.
The City and its contractor are prohibited from removing storm debris (including root balls) located on private property. Only storm debris placed on the public right-of-way will be eligible for collection. If you are having contract work performed on your home, the construction and demolition debris should be hauled away by the contractor.
