ISO Hydrant Flow Testing
The Albany Utilities Water Division in conjunction with the Albany Fire Department will begin conducting the Insurance Service Office (ISO) Fire Hydrant Flow Testing Program starting Monday, August 27, 2018, and finish approximately the last week of October 2018.
The goal of the testing program is to assure a reliable water supply in the event of a fire. The testing is required by the Insurance Service Office (ISO) and must be completed annually to maintain our Fire Protection Rating, which directly affects property owner insurance premiums. Fire hydrant flow testing provides several benefits to the water users of our system. Regular flushing allows for the highest quality of water delivery to customers. Flow testing also allows the Water Division and Fire Department to verify operation of the fire hydrants and identify areas of the distribution system that require repair and maintenance.
The process of hydrant flow testing often results in temporary cloudiness of the water or discolored water. The cloudiness or discolored water does not diminish the safety of the water supply. If a crew is working in your area, please be observant of the water quality while doing laundry or other tasks that require water. Should your water become cloudy or discolored during this process, allow the cold‐water tap to flow for a few minutes until the water runs clear.
As crews begin flushing hydrants, know that they are working hard to ensure the safety of the public. Motorists are strongly advised to drive slowly and use caution while in the vicinity of crews.
